Our work at the EYN Headquarters in Jos was interrupted this morning by the sound of people chanting and singing and horns honking. Going out on the street, I saw a caravan of cars and masses of people celebrating the outcome of the election Saturday, April 11, for state governors and members of the State Assembly. This crowd represented the APC Party, whose candidate for Governor of the Plateau State, Simon Bako Lalong, won.
I asked people I work with how they felt about the winning candidates. Several told me they don’t really know. So many candidates seem and speak as though they are honest and want to bring positive change, but after they are in office they are under tremendous pressure to fit into the corruption that has been established in the political system. “Only time will tell,” one man told me.
